Richard Dawkins is gonna be on Dr. Who!!!

Russell T Davies: Return of the (tea) Time Lord

The man who reinvented 'Doctor Who' for a new generation hints at a real surprise to come in the new series, as the man in the Tardis goes into 'dadshock'.

He is the creator of galaxies, saviour of Saturday night telly and the most influential gay man in Britain, but Russell T Davies can still shriek like a starstruck fanboy. "Richard Dawkins!"

Russell Davies shrieking!! Over a scientist!! This is just so many flavors of awesome. Though it would be even awesome-er if he got to kiss Cap'n Jack.

Via Pharyngula.

'Star Wars' Costume Maker Battles George Lucas Over Rights to Stormtroopers

LONDON — By Saturday evening the humdrum office of a firm of London solicitors could have been mistaken for a distant outpost of the Galactic Empire.

Between the desks were the white suits and helmets that are known to "Star Wars" aficionados the world over as the uniform of the Imperial Stormtrooper.

The lawyers working late that night were preparing to do battle with the opposing legal armies of George Lucas, the creator of the "Star Wars" films, over who owns the copyright on the stormtrooper uniforms, the headgear of the imperial fighter pilots and the helmet designed for Luke Skywalker as he led the final assault on the Death Star in the first film of the original trilogy.

Lucas’s business empire claims that it owns all the rights to the uniforms, while the lawyers at SimmonsCooperAndrew will argue that the rights are in fact vested in an obscure prop designer from Twickenham, England, who made the first helmets and suits for the 1977 film.

On Tuesday morning, the opposing sides as well as the assorted stormtrooper suits and helmets will arrive in the Chancery Division of the High Court.

The cool thing? They still dress in the traditional finery in Ye Olde England, so there will be these dudes in powdered wigs prancing around debating stormtrooper armor! It's so awesome.

Anybody have a clue what this might be? The translation programs come up "shower hat." Another said, "approximately age 2-3," so maybe for a baby?

It looks like plastic in the photos, but in that case, why the scissors.

Oh, mysterious mysteries!!

So, we were just reading this book review in the NY Times about how parents nowadays are forced to spend themselves into penury buying Baby Einstein videos and gym memberships for their baby lest they fear being reported to Social Services, when [livejournal.com profile] hooverdam sent us this insanely cute link featuring various and sundry bizarre gizmos available only in Japan for nurturing ones sprout. Somehow, a generation of children has grown up in the USA without use of the Winnie the Pooh porta potty. Parents, go read it, and be reassured.
