The first day we took the Denali tour, we were lucky enough to sit behind a cool couple from Tennessee who were like World Champion Wildlife Spotter Dudes. Seriously, they've been coming here every summer for like 8,000 years and can detect a mosquito landing on a squirrel from 2 miles away.

So, we were super excited when they called out WOLVES! Everybody packed to the correct side of the bus and peered out over the tundra. Our friends shouted out a complicated set of spotting instructions in an alien language, "just down from the second drainage, behind those willows!"

And we peered. And we peered. And Gus started taking random shots of the entire field.

And, nothing.

And, later, at home, we squinted at the pictures on the laptop, blown up, CSI style.

And, nothing.

Being the imaginative sort, I started calling the spot "The Valley of the Imaginary Wolves."

But then on the second day, we had a repeat of the exact same events. When, and I swear to god this is true, I saw one of the black spots MOVE.

Gus once again pored over the field with a telephoto, and saw ... Nothing.

But then later at the hotel, gus was going over the pix and saw this - A WOLF SHAPED ROCK YAY!

Or maybe it was a wolf.

OK, so, if you're watching for wildlife at Denali - which seems to be in its own way as big a passtime as collecting little plastic Star Wars figures among a certain set - you're told to watch for 4 or 5 of the park's big aminals. Like, the majestic moose, or the grizzly barrrr. One of the top , which we'd never heard of before, are the Dall sheep.

Maybe the reason we'd never heard of them is they're so damnably hard to see. Honestly, in this park, a bear wil practically wander onto the tour bus and pose for a closeup. Dall sheep OTOH are inevitably 90,000 miles away on a hilltop on the opposite side of the valley. They look like white dots. UNLESS you have a powerful telephoto lens. In which case ... They are BIGGER white dots.

You gotta understand, this is after like 16 hours rumbling around on a schoolbus, where we'd seen moose prancing and even such shy critters as wolf and fox and lynx. But Dall sheep? White damn dots.

And THEN ... The bus driver pulled up short in wonder. Dall sheep, just sunning themselves, right below the road. Of course , crack out the camera equipment and clickity click.

Wasn't 'till we got back to the cabin and looked at the pix that we noticed: look at these guys. We mean, have you ever seen such SMUG expressions in your life? They're all like WE'RE Dall sheep, and we're just fucking with you, bwa ha ha!!!

Gonna try to steal some time on the Intarnets tonight to do a real Denali update. So far we've seen nomming moose, looking-like-they-wanna-be-rutting moose, grizzley bear & baby grizzlettes, a coyote (no roadrunner), caribou, imaginary wolves, rock wolves, one maybe actually real wolf, dall sheep (annoying!!), a golden eagle, a quick red fox, an even quicker lynx, many appallingly fat squirrels, as well as many many odd examples of homo sapiens.

How has everybody been? Is everyone still out for Labor Day? I have many cool new tee shirts from obscure national parks.

So, when we were making plans for our visit to Lake Clark, our mischivious spouse, Mr. Tikistitch, offered us the following options: a hike to the top of some rugged something, or, "a boat ride around the lake."

Now, tiki not being the ruggedy type, tends to shut off her brain after a word like "hike.". OTOH, "boat ride" conjures images of Julie, your cruise director & margaritas on the Lido Deck.

Fast forward to reality: this (pictured above) was our cruise vessel, and we guess the bearded gentleman in the hip waders was Julie. (he was incredibly nice, BTW, even by Luuren Tewes' standards.). And, as it was about 50 degrees on the Lido Deck, plus no alky-hol at our Lodge) we had to forgo the margarita for the time being.

OTOH, I won a bunny.

Toy Story is fun, tho maybe not worth an excruciating 90 minute wait.

They're yelling at us to shut down our electronic devices now so I'll have to stop blogging.

Actually, it's pouring, so we've escaped into Monsters Inc. Mr. Tiki wants to know if Monsters Inc. is an LLC.

Space Mountain is also closed. We asked, "So they can add Obama?" But they didn't know.
