I had a history class in college where the prof pointed out one of the great things about the Constitution is that it's difficult to change. You go through the amendments, and you've got the first ten that were intended to be part of the initial package, so they don't count, then there're the two that cancel each other out (prohibition), a few that should've been there in the first place (slavery/citizenship), and then you're left with...mostly taxes and setting out rules for voting and federal office terms.

I got my first bit of political spam last week... one of those e-mail forwards screaming about how OMG BARACK OBAMA IS A MILITANT ISLAMIST AND HIS MOM WAS AN ATHEIST!!! WE MUST GET ON OUR KNEES AND FERVENTLY PRAY so that he doesn't make it into the White House!!!

It upset me on so many levels. I'm not used to religion being this big of an issue. Yeah, Canada has had its share of controversy when a member of Parliament suggests that we remove references to God from the national anthem or whatever, but... nothing on this scale.

You gotta remember, this country was founded by a bunch of flakes and misfits (which is what's so cool about it) but also by various cults of Protestant refugees for whom Europe just WASN'T PURE ENOUGH! That particular little strain of batshit just never quite dies out.
