Nina.

When we saw this doll announced on the Pullip boards, along with her bf, Sage, all we could think was, Why a kogal? Why now? Granted, we are usually premium suckers for Japanese schoolgirls, who are potentially cutest schoolkids in the entire multiverse.

Kinda....blah?

And the sloppy sox aren't even sloppy.

Um, yellow? Did they try to make this doll as boring as possible?

Here little pink phone.

Well, maybe we'll feel differently about Sage....

I don't think Nina is meant to be a kogal. I think she's just a regular high school student. I do recall that near the end of the kogal movement, there was a counter-movement amongst high school girls to go prim and proper with properly-fitted socks and blazers and black (or at least, darker than bleach-blonde) hair. It accompanied a huge resurgence in bihaku (literally "beauty white") cosmetics.

Ah, so that could be why she's so booooring.

Or, it could be Jun Planning's just running out of ideas.

BTW, you didn't see an article a few weeks back (think it was the NY Times) about women in Asia hurting themselves with screwy "skin bleaching" cosmetics, did you? Thought maybe at least the gangaru look would get everybody over that idea, but it sounds like there was a backlash.

Alas, we don't get paper newspapers anymore! I can't say I'm surprised to hear about skin-bleaching and stuff... the bihaku/beauty-white cosmetics that were popular when I was last in Japan was mostly along the lines of Alpha-Hydroxy Acids and using various plant extracts to destroy melanin.

Although I certainly won't argue with the possibility that Jun Planning is running low on ideas, I thought Sage and Nina were April releases? I assumed that they were "Hurrah for the New School Year" themed.

Ya, they're older, they've been sitting in a box in Rudi's shop waiting to come over for some time.

I've been weirded out by Pullip's being too freaky before (I'm still goggling over the blue-eyed Native Americans), but I think this is the very first time I've had a problem with them being too bland.

Also:

It's spelled ganguro (Guro/Kuro = black).

I wish there were ganguro ones! I don't care what anyone says, I love gal style... I suppose Venus was KINDA ganguro-y, but she struck me more as supposedly American Beauty Queen.

Um, kogals aren't necessarily schoolgirls, although schoolgirls CAN be kogals. (Confusing enough?) Kogals are hip, cool, trendy girls (think Kotobuki Ran in Super Gals!) who don't necessarily dress in school uniforms...

Nina is like, my most favorite pullip ever. XD That I have anyway hehe. Of course my BF giving me to her for our anniversary helped that a little haha.

Hehe haaai ^^ I made a post in my LJ a while back about it hehe. I looove her so much, and it's funny 'cause when I saw her promo I hated her haha. Over the months though I kept saying how much I wanted Nina XD So I was really surprised he got her for me ^^; She came out just about our anniversary too.

With a different face-up I'm quite sure this little darling would be adorable. Right now though, the yellow eye-shadow kinda irks me. Same reason I didn't get Panda... her eyeshadow pissed me off. (Green? EW!)

Oh, I totally forgot about Panda's green eyeshadow. *goes to look at own web page*

It's just, with her, at least you're totally distracted by that hood & the pink hair. But you're right, the facial coloring is similar.

Personally, too, there's a wooooorld of difference between green eyeshadow and yellow eyeshadow. Green is unusual, but some people can really make it work -- I think Panda is one of them -- and I have a few friends who are devotees of the green eyeshadow in a cute, funky way.

But... yellow? No REAL PEOPLE ever, EVER wear yellow eyeshadow. (Okay, maybe it has an even more fierce and underground cult following than green, but while one can buy tins of green Maybelline, I have yet to see yellow eyeshadow at my local drugstore -- especially for lighter-skinned people as opposed to darker-skinned ones.) And yet, dollies go around with yellow eyeshadow ALL THE FREAKING TIME. It seems like a good HALF of the Blythe releases have yellow eyeshadow. Um... seriously, wtf?

If the socks had been sloppy, it would have been SO much cooler.

I like her lips a lot-- the smile-- even though I thought she was kinda bland at first, she's growing on me. They sure do a lot of 'sweet' looking face ups lately.
