Strong quake shakes Southern California

LOS ANGELES - A strong earthquake shook Southern California on Tuesday, causing buildings to sway and triggering some precautionary evacuations. No immediate damage was reported.

The jolt was felt from Los Angeles to San Diego, and slightly in Las Vegas.

Preliminary information from the U.S. Geological Survey estimated the quake at magnitude 5.8, centered 29 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles near Chino Hills in San Bernardino County.

Keep forgetting to mention this: there were not one but TWO earthquakes whilst we were in Tokyo. We completely missed the first one 'cause of talking with fellow geeks about geekdom (that's what growing up in Cali will do to you). The second we noticed, when we were all at the BBQ place waiting for our plates o' meat. (Yeah, we went to one of those places like in Lost in Translation. It was OK.) Anyway, regarding the quake and or aftershock, we asked if it meant Gojira was coming. (Hey, we were at the seaside!!!) Speaking of which, we were kinda disappointed that our hotel didn't have any evacuation instructions in case of attack by giant robots.

Posted this to the Lilo & Stitch group a few days ago, and forgot to put a note here. Volume 2 of the Lilo & Stitch: The Series Japanese DVD boxed set is now open for preorder from Amazon.co.jp here. (There will eventually be 4 volumes.)

You need an all regions DVD player in order to play the DVDs. Which, probably pretty much anybody reading our blog already has anyway.

The first volume has all the original English dialog, and you can also get English subtitles. We're assuming the second volume will be the same, even though nobody believed us the first time around. (Nobody listens to tiki, sigh.)

Not at Bennigan's....

Bennigan's, Steak-and-Ale chains abruptly close

Bennigan's and Steak-and-Ale restaurant chains, owned by Metromedia Restaurant Group, sought permission to liquidate in bankruptcy court protection, without citing a reason.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the Metromedia Restaurant Group prepared a bankruptcy filing after allegedly violating several terms of a lending agreement with GE Capital Solutions.

The general manager of the Bennigan's at 11460 North Kendall Dr. told CBS4.com that he received a phone call Tuesday morning informing him to cease operations effective Tuesday. Monday was their last day of business.

Atrios linked this story. Totally sucks those guys losing their jobs, especially since it sounds like they were given no notice at all. But that said, we're not terribly sorry to see the chain go. We truly can't remember ever, ever, ever entering a Bennigan's restaurant of our own volition. Bennigan's was, rather, inevitably the place to which we ended up being herded to for foodstuff-related "socializing" relating to any and all of our least favorite workplaces. And it seemed, the worse the job, the more greasy lunches at Bennigan's. Did this place actually decide to cater to the "we really hate our workers so let's give them slow death by artery clogging" school of management?
