Not at Bennigan's....

Bennigan's, Steak-and-Ale chains abruptly close

Bennigan's and Steak-and-Ale restaurant chains, owned by Metromedia Restaurant Group, sought permission to liquidate in bankruptcy court protection, without citing a reason.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the Metromedia Restaurant Group prepared a bankruptcy filing after allegedly violating several terms of a lending agreement with GE Capital Solutions.

The general manager of the Bennigan's at 11460 North Kendall Dr. told CBS4.com that he received a phone call Tuesday morning informing him to cease operations effective Tuesday. Monday was their last day of business.

Atrios linked this story. Totally sucks those guys losing their jobs, especially since it sounds like they were given no notice at all. But that said, we're not terribly sorry to see the chain go. We truly can't remember ever, ever, ever entering a Bennigan's restaurant of our own volition. Bennigan's was, rather, inevitably the place to which we ended up being herded to for foodstuff-related "socializing" relating to any and all of our least favorite workplaces. And it seemed, the worse the job, the more greasy lunches at Bennigan's. Did this place actually decide to cater to the "we really hate our workers so let's give them slow death by artery clogging" school of management?

We don't have them around here, though I was always intrigued since it's Butters' favorite restaurant on South Park. At least the world still has Casa Bonita.....

My former boss had a fetish for Buca Di Beppo, a "family-style" Italian restaurant that serves you ENORMOUS BUCKETS of food. I had to learn to eat very sparingly when she hauled us down there for another of her 2-1/2-hour lunches, because I found through bitter experience that there was something in their sauces that my body definitely did not like.

Oh, god, I hate Buca di Beppo! It's big servings, but crap food. I just don't get the attraction, but I've done it for work stuff as well.

I used to work at a Bennigan's in Philadelphia; it went out of business because we were literally in spitting difference between a local hot spot, so the only people who went to Bennigan's were old people and those who couldn't get into the local hot spot.

A cook of ours was also a reserve in the army, and he took he Monte Cristo (a deep fried sandwich filled with every sort of dead animal imaginable) for testing. Testing the calories, and such.

Half of that sandwich was 2000 calories. Half. Not counting fries, or the other half or soup because everyone starts with soup.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you truly are trying to kill someone with artery clogging goodness (?), Bennigan's was the way to go. But I would be lying if I said I wouldn't miss the baked potato soup.

Oh, god, the Monte Cristo was like my favorite thing ever when I was a kid. Wanna really be grossed out? I'd eat them with *strawberry jam* on them. (It came with the sandwich, so evidently there was adult complicity.) Ah youth!
