Date: 2005-09-20 10:48 am (UTC)I still feel kinda dumb about snapping up all the Cardcaptors merch when it all seemed to go on super-duper discount about 5 minutes after I bought it.

(If the name changes make you cringe, just remember: NOTHING can be as hilariously bad as the Tokyo Mew Mew name changes.)
I don't think MewMew Power/English Tokyo Mew Mew has had any merch, which is weird! I don't know if they're once-bitten-twice-shy from Sailor Moon's slow decline, or if it's because Tokyo Mew Mew was only one season long, or what. They're still churning out new translated episodes so I'm trying not to judge too quickly.

Date: 2005-09-20 11:08 am (UTC)Tokyo Mew Mew already had an incredibly goofy naming scheme - the girls all had food items as first names, and "theme color + natural object" as last name. The bad guys were named Quiche, Tarte, and Pie.
The English version went with apparently random names. Ichigo became Zoey, Lettuce became Bridget... and they kept their *English* names as their superhero names, becoming Mew Zoey and Mew Bridget and so forth. Which kind of negates the whole point of codenames, doesn't it? (The Japanese version also kept their first names, to be fair, except they already had bizarre first names so it was Mew [food item] rather than Mew [Random Girl's Name].)
So they localized it. Fair enough. The hilarious badness is what they did with the bad guys' names.
Bad Guy #1: Formerly Quiche, now DREN. Being a palindromic thinker by nature, I immediately said "OMG his name is Nerd Backwards. I can't wait until KEEG and KROD show up."
Bad Guy #2 and #3 just showed up this month, and they have gone from Tarte and Pie to TARB and SARDON.
Brat backwards.
And... I guess they couldn't think of another backwards name, or they needed more syllables, so they just removed the "ic" from Sardonic. *tut tut*

Date: 2005-09-20 03:07 pm (UTC)Some of the original Sailor Moon episodes look like the people who wrote the English dialog didn't even have access to a script.
