Are you going to be collecting the US edition DoReMi plushies (assuming that FoxKids is doing the logical thing and merchandising the hell out of that show)?

Is it coming to the US? Is there going to be merchandising? Was there ever anything in the US for Tokyo Mew Mew?

I still feel kinda dumb about snapping up all the Cardcaptors merch when it all seemed to go on super-duper discount about 5 minutes after I bought it.

I believe DoReMi has already debuted on FoxKids. They were pimping it as part of their new anime line-up a few weeks ago, but I keep missing it. :/

(If the name changes make you cringe, just remember: NOTHING can be as hilariously bad as the Tokyo Mew Mew name changes.)

I don't think MewMew Power/English Tokyo Mew Mew has had any merch, which is weird! I don't know if they're once-bitten-twice-shy from Sailor Moon's slow decline, or if it's because Tokyo Mew Mew was only one season long, or what. They're still churning out new translated episodes so I'm trying not to judge too quickly.

Given that I'm not nihongo-friendly, Magical Doremi doesn't bug me. Nowhere near as terrible as "Hollywood MewMew" would have been.

Seems unless an anime series has a very low price point item that catches on, like the Pokemon cards, they're not likely to bother with toys.

Oh, I was specifically talking about the names.

Tokyo Mew Mew already had an incredibly goofy naming scheme - the girls all had food items as first names, and "theme color + natural object" as last name. The bad guys were named Quiche, Tarte, and Pie.

The English version went with apparently random names. Ichigo became Zoey, Lettuce became Bridget... and they kept their *English* names as their superhero names, becoming Mew Zoey and Mew Bridget and so forth. Which kind of negates the whole point of codenames, doesn't it? (The Japanese version also kept their first names, to be fair, except they already had bizarre first names so it was Mew [food item] rather than Mew [Random Girl's Name].)

So they localized it. Fair enough. The hilarious badness is what they did with the bad guys' names.

Bad Guy #1: Formerly Quiche, now DREN. Being a palindromic thinker by nature, I immediately said "OMG his name is Nerd Backwards. I can't wait until KEEG and KROD show up."

Bad Guy #2 and #3 just showed up this month, and they have gone from Tarte and Pie to TARB and SARDON.

Brat backwards.

And... I guess they couldn't think of another backwards name, or they needed more syllables, so they just removed the "ic" from Sardonic. *tut tut*

Oh, man I had no clue--I never saw to the Americanized version. I'm not an anime snob, I'm just really repulsed by a lot of anime that's been through the meat grinder here. Listening to even a few minutes of the Sailor Moon dub gives me hives.

To be honest, I saw a few eps of the original Japanese Mew Mew, but wasn't blown away.

I'm semi-enjoying the dub; the translators are occasionally doing some cute character stuff. And I enjoy the unsubtle homoerotic tensions. But the names make me weep.

I'd imagine you have some professional interest in seeing how other folks work. Or don't work.

Some of the original Sailor Moon episodes look like the people who wrote the English dialog didn't even have access to a script.

I found out about Doremi last week and taped it. It was cute. The next one is going to be the 3rd episode I think. I also taped Mew Mew Power and didn't care for it. And I taped the Bratz show. Its computer animated, and completely cheesey. Maybe all cartoons are, but it seems like the shows they make for little girls (when they actualy bother making any) are completely dumbed down. Kids are way smarter then these shows.

Anywho, let me know if you hear about Doremi merchandise. I have one of the japanese dolls and I love it. Id love to be able to get them here. I'd also like to see the subbed version.

I kinda wish Bandai would just re-release all the Japanese stuff over here. But I'm wondering if the little dolls would go over. I don't think toy companies make those little gumby like dolls for the US market any more--I think they're afraid a little kid would choke on the wire and they'd get sued.

hmm

Maybe they could use the bodies from the strawberry shortcake dolls. Those are also made by bandai. Thats what my doremi doll reminded me off when I bought her.
