To bring some context to the current state of my vision, I just got my first set of bifocals like a year ago. And, yeah, I like the screen size just fine, BUT sometimes I have trouble viewing the text. This is most annoying on email, which seems to vary completely randomly from message to message, and, you can't do the cool "tip it over and read it in landscape format" trick like you do with the web.
What I'd really suggest is she get herself to an Apple store, or somewhere she can play with an iPhone for a bit and decide. I originally went to play with them at the U bookstore, since I wouldn't be annoyed by salespeople there. And, my first glance, it was like, Hoo-HAH! Just the whole "hey a web page really looks like a web page on your computer" really sold me. She also need to figure out if she can live with a touch screen. I found the keypad a bit annoying at first (especially when you're jerking around on the bus) but I'm learning to live with it.
The thing that REALLY made me fall in love is just the easy, easy, easy user interface. The dude who sold it to use maybe told us two things, and we were off. There's like TWO buttons. Maybe three if you count the volume control. And that's it! Otherwise, if you want to scroll down, run your finger down, it scrolls. Wanna increase the font? Pull it out with your fingers. Wanna see landscape? Tip it sideways. Like wow.
