Hmm O.o, strange that they seem obsessed with bi racial heritage, with the western countries no less. last I heard those kinda kids were shunned....

Uh... shunned?
I've generally seen biracial kids exoticized more than shunned in Japan. Neither is really a good thing, and I'll admit that biracial kids are trendier if they're pop-stars/actors/models (i.e. are "pretty things to look at").

** So long as they're white/Japanese biracial. I don't know how Japan treats biracial kids with non-Caucasian parents, although my cousin's best friend as a child was either Mexican or Mexican-Japanese. I have family/friends who've dealt with racism based on their heritage, but I believe that was more anti-Korean sentiment than explicitly based on biracial-ness.

Meh, it would not surpise me if my info on that was either a. completely wrong, b. outta date, or c. applied to somewhere else. It was more of a word of mouth thing than anything written.

Sorry if I sounded a bit harsh

To be fair, my info could be wrong as well. I haven't studied the subject formally, so my info is drawn from personal experience and what I see on Japanese TV. It's entirely possible and likely that the average biracial person is rejected or shunned by their peers, particularly if they're not supermodel-beautiful.

It reminds me of when I see Japanese people talking about how Americans discriminate against Japanese people, and see them as inferior... while my own personal experience is that there's a sizeable subculture in North America that thinks Japanese chicks are damned sexy, and Japanese culture in general is awesome. One person's experiences may directly contradict someone else's "facts"; everything is true for a given value of "true".

its no biggie, you were not harsh at all. Its a big grey area, but I believe the intro to cyborg 009's vintage manga made a reference to it (joe shimura/009 is american/japanese), pointing out that the cyborgs were representitve of the oppressed cultures at the time. However, that might have been talking about how he was an orphan - i don't have it with me at the moment.

I;ve also picked it up from the media, and such shows as law and order, as well as conversations with some friends.

and oh yeah,i am totally part of the "asians are sexy" camp =D, so perhaps its just a cultural barrier.

Hmmm. I think I vaguely recall that. (Are they still publishing the vintage 009 series? I think we're stuck on volume 5 or something.)

I think Joe had a whole lot of bad things going for him. He was biracial in a time that was not kind to biracial kids, AND he was an orphan, AND he was a bit of a street tough, was he not?

Speaking of racial stereotypes, HOLY COW Cyborg 008. And 006, really.

yeah, i have all volumes up to 8, tokyopop translation. i wanna pick up the japanese originals but i can't findem..

he was a bit of a delinquint, which was why he was in the church and why he was pretty much framed for the preist's murder. poor kiddo.

from what I understand though, at least the illustrations in that way were intentional, as it was tryng to lampoon them(i.e. the stereotypes) in the characters. I'm not sure though but I think they served a higher purpose. It shocked me too at first but I think thats part of the reaosn why I love the vintage stuff.

Yeah, I have the Tokyo Pop edition too. I can't remember how easy or hard to find the Japanese originals are... I thought I saw them at Book Off in NYC, though.

My friend Kaz is a Cyborg 009 fan, and I think she mentioned that there were a few odd bumps in the series' continuity, and how it's been collected into tankoubon.

I hope Tokyo Pop is taking the series seriously... I almost fell out of my chair when I saw this:

On a more dolly note: I forget, do you have Azone's Cyborg 009 outfit?

I know they reissued them, becuase I saw them new in kinokuniya(sp). i just cannot find them there now, and I don't remember the charatcers for the title or the look of the spine.

thats bizzare...o.o its part of thier 100% authentic manga series, but that makes me wonder, what volume is that?

tankoubon?....explain for the ignorant american ^^()?

no, I wanted that outfit for a long long while, but I keep ether forgetting about it or blowing my money on ABJD stuff.

I can't remember which volume "Luis, no text!" crops up in... I want to say Volume 3, but I'm not sure. All I know is that I later saw some blurb written by the very same Luis in a different Tokyo Pop manga, and I started screaming "OH MY GOD, it's No-Text Luis!"

Sorry, tankoubon is just the term for those little paperback compilations of weekly manga. Like a Trade Paperback is for US comics.

I can't even find Azone's C-Zone character cosplay outfits anymore. :/ I REALLY liked the Cyborg one and the Galaxy Angel ones. ...but not enough to commission a copy from one of the BJD clothiers.

Yet.

I am trying not to think about how cute Shun might look in a Cyborg 009 outfit.

EEEEEK~! thats really disturbing, and i don't think any of the cyborgs were named luis ether. the editor really shoulda caught that.

I think Luis is the name of the editor for the Tokyo Pop version of Cyborg 009... so probably it was some kind of editorial note to Luis? But yeah, it was an awful thing to do to a classic manga.
