As all are no doubt aware, we love buying international collectibles. But what we love most is when said collectibles are more or less indicative of the culture of said non-US principality.

This is a Stitchie "drying rack" from Japan. And, as you might know, in Japan, space is somewhat limited, thus necessitating leaving one's undies out to dry in a more or less public area of one's apartment.

Stitch to the rescue! As you can see, this is just a little rack with clips. The beauty comes in with the fabric cover one stretches over the rack, so visiting friends won't have to stare at your drippy braziers. And, what's genius about this item, it's then relatively cheap for the manufacturer to print images of a beloved licensed character on the cover, thus resulting in an item that's not only practical, but sufficiently kawaii to pass muster.

Date: 2008-06-18 08:49 pm (UTC)It is funny, because my experience was at first, wow, look at all the laundry on everyone's balconies. But then it was like, hey that's really great because it saves on energy and people aren't all tied up with "oh my how tacky air drying clothing". And ended up just not seeing it any more because I was too busy focusing on all the beautiful little bits of gardening and fun colorful signs everywhere.
I'm gonna have to look for one the next time I order from J-List.
