So, when we opened our latest box of Japanese pop culture detritus, we were amazed to find a Rockin' Elvis Stitch! (And, yes, we were surprised. tiki is old, and sometimes between seeing an item on the web and bidding on the item and paying for the item and getting the item shipped and picking up the box and actually opening said, box - which is often a lapse of sevearl months - we completely forget what it was we bought. So, it's like Xmas! Only slightly more expensive.)

This item combines three of our most favorite things about the universe: Stitch, Elvis, and bizarre Japanese battery-operated toys.

So, we got out the Phillips head screwdriver and the pack of AAs, and with the aid of Tiki Labs LLCs many battery gnomes, set out to see: what rockin' tunes would Elvis Stitch care to favor us with? A little Hound Dog? Maybe something more obscure, like A Little Less Conversation. Or something tasty from his later oevre, like Suspicious Minds?

Let's find out....

Er, OK.

Dude, how weird is it that unless I click comments, I can't see the Tiki Stitch video? There is something else there, about a woman talking about making a new album or something. Once inside the comments, I can see the Elvis Stitch Lullaby video?

Hm. Seems to work for me, but I've had YouTube embeds do bizarre stuff before.

Ack!

He's just playing those rhyming tunes. Not lullabies. I caught it again and watched it. Man, that's absolutely silliness. Hehehe. Cute... but peculiar indeed. And I'd be expecting him to pipe out a "Elvis" tune.

If you hit the Action!Stitch tag on the side, and look at some older entries, a lot of my battery operated toys all play the same songs.

I was wondering if there were copyright reasons for using nursery rhymes instead of Elvis songs, but the gashapon greeting cards from earlier had "Love me Tender" for the Stitch card. So... I have no idea.

Yeah, these battery-operated toys are made in China and they're cheap-cheap-cheap. All of 'em use public domain songs, and they reuse the same songs (and probably the same works) extensively.

Now, the greeting card having Love Me Tender - that's surprising. Even the American Stitch musical snow globes usually play Aloha Oe rather than Elvis. Maybe the Presley estate's licensing is different in Japan.

There's no guarantee that Elvis never sang "Mary Had A Little Lamb"! He just probably was about 3 at the time, and thus never recorded it.

I feel your pain about licensed items produced in China. I have a swell Peanuts musical wall clock at home that, every hour on the hour (during daylight hours only, thank the gods) plays a cheery nursery rhyme tune. I have to admit that my jaw fell off the day I heard it playing "It's A Small World." That seemed very wrong coming from a non-Disney item!

I... uh... wow. Who knew THAT would happen? lol this must've been Elvis' softer side.

And now we take you to Memphis to find out what the reading is on the tachometer at Graceland...
