Official: obesity risk to half of all children

The government has admitted for the first time that almost half of all children will be dangerously overweight by 2050 if drastic action is not taken to halt the growth in childhood obesity.

Revealing the true scale of the obesity epidemic, Ed Balls, the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, said the number of children in the high risk category was rising at a worrying rate.

'If that trend continues, by mid-century we'd be getting close to half of all children classified as obese,' he said.

From The Guardian, though we've seen similar in enough US papers.

We know why they're so alarmed.

When we chubby kids finally outnumber you skinny kids who teased us mercilessly, there will be hell to pay. Oh yes.

I was a skinny kid. Mind you, a skinny kid with red hair AND glasses. I even got teased by the chubby kids and didn't call them fat or anything because my mommy had taught me it was mean to do so. I even got beaten up a couple of times by the tall fat girl in my class... And now I'm all grown up, I admit I sometimes use "the elbows of death" (ie my super bony and sharp elbows) when a chubby person tries to crush me in the public transportation. Cruel, yes, but it's called survival of the fittest ;-)

Come to think of it, *I* once got beaten up by a fat kid. Boy, talk about no honor among thieves....
