Soooo, people all comment when you lose weight--why don't people comment when you gain weight?*

*Well, other than if you're going out with a dickhead boyfriend. But we suppose we're all past that, aren't we?**

**Actually, our graduate adviser used to comment when people gained weight. But, thing is, he was a jerk.

Wow!

My adviser in grad school once did a study for which he forced all of us grad students to gavage rates. It was probably one of the most horrible experiences of my life, not to mention grad school, and one reason I got completely out of animal research after I graduated. Can't even *imagine* doing it to people.

Here's my view on the matter : people don't comment when you gain weight unless you're thin/skinny. If you're in the size 0 category and suddenly, you wear a size 1, people, esp. girls around you, comment. They start saying things such as "oh, you looked TOO thin before anyway, you look better with meat on your bones" (read : "you look more like us now that your butt is a little chubbier than before, please gain some more so we feel better about ourselves").

It happened to me a couple of years ago. Now I'm back in the size 0 range and people never comment on my weight loss. But I sometimes hear women tell me I look tired/sick, meaning "oh you probably suffer from an ED"...

BTW, I think Mr Tiki and you look pretty short on that photo (not to mention that Mr Tiki looks blue in face as well). Did you use a wide angle or something ? ;-)

I've got one so horrible, I'm actually reluctant to share it, since I think it traumatizes *other* people! I was a chubby kid, and the focus of a lot of my mother's rage, as she put me on one after another unsuccessful diet. When I finally moved away from home, I figured out a bit more about how to eat healthy (hey, the grocery store stocks NONFAT yogurt!), and finally lost the baby fat. My mom never commented--to my face. But a bit later, I learned she had been telling all the friends and realitives I was anorexic. Nice.

Have you seen the film, Mean Girls? Lindsay Lohan aside (she was actually quite good I thought) it was a clever slam at the dysfunctional ways girls and women relate to each other.
