Sooo, as those who are even vaguely aquainted with tiki know, she's not really a Vogue person. Indeed, quite the opposite. Our idea of dressing smart is wearing a t-shirt inscribed with Maxwell's equations.* We dress in the dark, and leave the house each morning praying that we have somehow found two socks that match.

But given that we really have not purchased any new clothes in 2 or 3 years, and given that observing street fashion in Seattle is of minimal assistance (some people have flipflops poking out from under their pantlegs during the winter months, has been all we can glean), we've actually invested lately in an odd issue of Vogue. It's been, actually, quite unhelpful, and what's worse, quite as unexciting as this season's finale of American Idol, with more interviews of the same boring celebrities. tiki grew up during an era when Grace Jones thought she was a pop star. Where, we thought, was the weird???

And then we happened upon Vogue Nippon.

A coworker, who is actually Italian, had recommended Italian Vogue, so we decided to give the Japanese version a flip last time we were at our favorite newsstand. We were immediately drawn in by a small photoessay on anime-influenced fashions. Here was something that never, except in our wildest dreams (where the taxi drivers sing and dance!) would we actually see on the streets of our dreary burg.

Thumbing through, we realized why we had stopped buying Takara Jenny dolls some time back. Why do they insist on making a million identical Lolita girls, when what we really crave is a doll like this?

Or this? With Space Doggie, of course!

Speaking of anime, we were a bit taken aback by the lack of Asian models, which meant, of course, few Japese women posing for the magazine. There was here, as everywhere, a sad perponderance of the blonde. Perhaps another reason why we've given up on poor Jenny.

Being a product intended for the Japanes market, there is the required smidgen of kawaii, like this adorable (and probably unaffordable) charm bracelet.

A special section, which was also translated into English, comprised a guide to the "Tokyo Future." Evidently, in The Future, there will be goth loli girls, and Super Dollfies. We wondered a bit that the section was titled "Otaku," as we've heard the word carries the overtones of an insult in Japan.

Extra bonus junk: appended to the end of an article about futuristic fashion, a cross-referencing of the major Star Wars characters, and, we suppose, their favorite accessories. Who knew Obi-Wan would look so cute with a metallic silver handbag!

And then we came upon....

The cutest undies EVAR in the whole universe!!!!

What's worse, they're produced by an American designer. For whom tiki has obtained a phone number. They cost more money than anyone anywhere ever should pay for underthings.

So, maybe we'll only buy one pair.

Or two.

*This is actually Mr. Tikistitch's joke. But since he is currently out of town, we will take all the credit. Ha.

After "Train Man" people started talking about "otaku chic" and stuff, so maybe it's in that kind of vein.

I read [livejournal.com profile] foto_decadent when I have time. Mostly for laughs and drawing poses, but sometimes I see nifty stuff. And [livejournal.com profile] jmagazinescans is fun, though mostly gothic lolita and cutesy stuff.

I hadn't heard of those groups--thanks! Though I'm getting awfully tired of Loli stuff.

In dire need of cute undies ? Why don't you go to H&M ? They have a Hello Kitty! line with adorable panties, socks, bras, pjs, etc. They also have Muppets, Snoopy and other cute characters adorning their underthings. You should see my lingerie collection !

I've actually seen HK undies, but alas, we have no H&M in Washington. However (see below) Anita sez they've got 'em in Cali. Woo-hoo!

Well, we have many H&M in Paris... So if you want me to buy some stuff for you, lemme you... (and give me your US size AND your measurements, because those French sizes can be treacherous... i.e. either vanity sizes or stupidly smllish)

I'd probably second the other person's suggestion to go to H&M. I too prefer Italian Vogue, but it's still pretty useless for things I'd actually wear. I have a handful of fashion blogs I look at if you're interested.

For casual, I pretty much live in my J Brand 14" cut pencil leg jeans in Vintage wash and a top of some kind. Yesterday it was this one:

In black. It's got cute puffy sleeves and has a flattering cut.

There's also all kinds of cute boutiques in Seattle, but I'm sure you knew that already.

Actually, after passing by this one cute boutique for literally years, I went in and tried on some stuff, and pretty much found nothing that fits my body type (ie, Earth Mother what just swallowed a watermelon). Then I went in a couple of *other* boutiques, and quickly realized, they stocked EXACTLY the same items from the same designers. Kinda disappointing.

Sure, I'd love links to the blogs. I'd never seen that puffy elbows sweater before--it's kind of adorable!

SHOPPING!!

Hey ... there's an H&M in Pasadena. I have not yet been - but would be fun to go 'look'... Maybe we'll even see Madonna! (just kidding on the latter).

Alas, we do not have H&M in Washington, so we'll HAVE to go.
