Chinese Government Acts on Amusement Park Controversy

The Chinese government is working to resolve the controversy regarding the illegal use of trademarked characters at the state-run Shijingshan Amusement Park, a case described in a previous article.

In recent months the park has attracted a great deal of negative international attention over the unauthorized use of Disney characters, Doraemon, etc., in park attractions. According to a Record China report dated May 11th, the Beijing Copyright Office has issued an order to correct these instances of intellectual property misuse, and that the use of Disney characters at the park has ceased. The Beijing Copyright Office stated that it began an investigation of the park after being contacted by the Walt Disney Company.

Until now Shijingshan Amusement Park staff denied allegations of copyright infringement, insisting that a mascot similar to Mickey Mouse in appearance was a "large-eared cat" and that other familiar-seeming figures were not Disney-inspired but instead original characters loosely based on Grimm's fairy tales. However, it appears that the Chinese government has been prompted to act to avoid appearing lax on copyright issues, which have become a common source of friction between China and the outside world.

And Cinderella is "a Chinese country girl."

Yeah, we know copyright infringement is bad, but the sheer chutzpah is fairly hilarious.

um.. that's Snow White that they're buying their tickets from what might be considered between the folds of her skirt?? (yikes) See I thought it was an ice cream booth which would have been worse I guess.. ok ewww.. nevermind it's still just all very wrong..

what's with the culture in China that says it's ok to hack & infringe on copyrights?? I mean if they had any freedom of creativity perhaps they wouldn't have to steal others work, no? sigh.. so wrong.
