Ooh, nice side by side comparison!

I remember quite a few Korean companies putting out OMGNAZI outfits, with varying degrees of armband-ness... I thought Volks would be smart enough to avoid something like this, especially on their English/International site. But I guess the siren call of Military Chic was too strong.

*waits for the "omg no wai there's no armband and the pants color is totally different, it doesn't look similar at all" posts*

Yeah, I figured Volks would get to Nazi chic sooner or later. Doesn't seem to be any discussion at all on DOA yet, which is kind of an surprise.

I thought DoA put "Nazis" on their list of banned topics? Although the new Debate Forum would hopefully be a good place for people to have a rational, thoughtful discussion about such topics.

Oh, I didn't know that. (I rarely look at DoA, 'cause it only makes me wanna spend money.) Anyways, I've never seen a discussion of same that didn't degenerate into "OMG U R oppressing meeeeeee!" whining. More heat than light, as it were.

If I were totally rich, I'd buy one, name him Mengele, take lots of tea party photoshoots -- and act totally dumbfounded if anyone called me on it.

"What? It's a pretty name I learned on the internet! What's wrong?"

I am really quite curious how the "Volks/DOA can do no evil" party line is going to fare after this. Beressa got cancelled, so...

Volks is just selling an outfit, though, as opposed to a full-set blonde blue-eyed Nazi dollie. (The other pictures of the set show him with a riding crop!) So it'll be interesting to see what happens... if people will call Volks on it, or if Volks will defend themselves saying "OH NO THIS TOTALLY ISN'T NAZI", or if everyone will quietly pretend this isn't happening.

Jinx! I was actually tossing around the idea of buying one (I've got the money--WTF?) and then taking some totally tasteless pictures. "Ooo, lookee, it's My Little Kristalnacht!") Trouble is, I don't think I could conjure up something *so* tasteless that I couldn't imagine an owner actually doing it in all seriousness.

Oh, we could collaborate -- you've got the money, I could supply the tastelessness. Although I'm wagering half of the audience simply wouldn't get it.

If any of us could actually sew, we could also drive the point home by, say, sewing little MSD-sized outfits complete with yellow stars.

*cough* I just found a pattern for crocheting stars... does that count?
(Oh wait, I think the pattern I found was five-pointed stars. Rats!)

TOTALLY RANDOM NOTE

I would like to hereby apologize to the good people of Germany for the following tasteless comment:
"oh Volks why would you?? ...I guess the company name was a dead giveaway, huh."

YES I KNOW THAT GERMANY DOES NOT EQUAL NAZI, YOU CAN STOP BEING HYPERSENSITIVE NOW GERMANS. Seriously, there's this one German guy that started hanging out in our friends' IRC channel, and he gets on my nerves.
German Guy: "You know, Jews aren't even a race."
Rest of channel: "W-We weren't even talking about Jews..."

Oh, man, I hadn't even thought of that!

Why is it called, "Volks," anyways? Is it after the German? I wouldn't imagine that name would be easy for Japanese speakers to prounounce.

Japan LOVES THE GERMAN language. The Japanese words for "part-time job" is "arubaito", after the German word "arbeit". I think there are a bunch of other German loanwords in Japanese, too. Volks (the company) chooses to Japan-i-fy its names as 'bo-o-ku-su' so it's not very hard to pronounce at all... until recently, most "v" sounds were rendered as "b" sounds in Japanese.

In the past 10 or 20 years, though, there's been a trend towards rending "b" sounds as "v". So "rabu" is moving towards "ravu" (the "v" is approximated by adding vocalization dots to a "u" sound) and "babe" (as in "I got you babe") is being rendered as "bave". And I've seen the Japanese word 'baka' rendered as "vaka", but I think that's probably facetious.

HEH I WAS LOOKING AT THAT. I'm sure you could modify it. Knitting patterns NOT to share with your mother-in-law!

I've often wondered WHY the company wanted to name itself Volks... I mean... the people? Eh? I would expect something with more gay-angels or something. The whole "different languages sound romantic" thing is pretty widespread, but... why Volks?

Okay, German Guy is weird, but I have seen why many German people can sometimes get sensitive. One friend of mine got the front of her house vandalized because she was flying both the flags of America and Germany. O_o

See my comment above. Germany is ESPECIALLY considered cool in Japanese... I think it's up there with French and English in terms of "languages that anime and manga use for their titles and character names". Also keep in mind that Volks didn't start out as a gay angel dolly company; their roots are in model kits, so they probably wanted to project an image of "WE ARE SUPER-EFFICIENT METICULOUS AWESOME KIT-MAKERS", since Germany is associated with precision and awesomeness in Japanese culture.

I like the idea of subverting the nazi uniform. Seems to have a certain irony that it ends up on a dolly...it also seems to me to undermine it and everything that it stood for. I think it'd be more subversive if it were worn by a girl doll though.
