I think it's because there seems to be a broad range of acceptable "looks"--like, people actually succeed on their ACTING ABILITIES rather than how much they look like fashion models. :p Then you also wind up with smarter and more talented people overall.

No, it's not just you. Have you ever seen any of the Blackadder shows? It's amazing to see Hugh Laurie in it when you have also seen House. (He's in Blackadder the Third and Blackadder Goes Fourth.)
