Hmmm.... I used to work at Borders, and we had a deluxe edition of The Half-Blood Prince, and from what I can recall, it was just called that because it was part leather, came in a case with different artwork, and had gilded pages or something. Like the Bible, which is how a lot of fans treat her work anyhow, hahaha.
But see now I'm confused too, cause that's the German amazon and in Germany (as well as the UK) they have "adult" versions of the book and "children's" versions. The text is the same, obviously, only the cover art looks more grown-up and they figure that if it doesn't look like a kids' book, more adults will buy it if they have the option of getting the mature cover. But my friends always buy the kids ones anyhow. It's a stupid idea two have 2 versions IMO, as if having a "distinguished grown-up cover" would mean you were reading a different book than the 10-year-old sitting next to you. But it's Harry Potter! It works on all levels.
Yeah exactly. It's kind of humorous considering that it's the same damn book. But if it makes people feel better, then whatev. It's great marketing on the publishing house's end.
When I lived in the U.S. they only had one version, but when the 7th book comes out I'll still be in Europe and I want the kids' version to go along with the "look" of my others. And so that if I have kids they can read them and not feel like they're reading John Grisham's "The Client" or something. But who knows, the books might be incredibly outdated and "over" by then anyhow.
I was gonna get the adult cover with I got 1/2 Blood Prince, but they were out of stock when it was my turn :( The Potions Book cover would of been so cool after I'd read the book. Though I think I'll go with the kids version this time so it'll fit in with my others.
All the above ... and they want you to spend more $$$!
Speaking of Harry Potter ... it seems all the news media is on a high horse that Daniel Radcliffe is not just an actor, but embodies Harry Potter & are all upset that he's chosen to 'go for a different role' in the stage production of Equus. Much like Anne Hathaway in Brokeback Mountain. Sheesh...
You can find pictures of him nekkid with horses on lots of fansites. The media may be upset, but a lot of the fans don't seem to be. Imagine that.
I'm just not a Daniel Radcliffe fan. I haven't liked most of the movies, though they have had their good points - Moaning Myrtle and Lucius Malfoy were both AWESOME.

I think they've been getting better overall. I was so underwhelmed by Sorceror's Stone that I didn't even want to bother with CoS. Fortunately, Mr. Tiki dragged me.
What I wish (which will NEVER happen) is that they made the series into a semi-cheapie BBC TV series, where they skimp on the special effects, but develop the characters over several episodes, and also have kids who aren't so pretty.
I heard that the girl who plays Hermione is considering quitting the movie series altogether, that it's just taking over and she wants a social life and friends and to be in school like every other girl on the planet.
I can't imagine what it must be like for those kids to have to "embody" these characters, especially since they took it on so young and not really knowing the consequences.
Yeah, I've heard it's her last movie too. I thought at one point they were just gonna fire *all* the kids and get younger ones, since they're getting kind of old for the roles. But I guess they're becoming "stars." Kinda weird.
It's virtually identical to the normal version, but it costs twice as much.
Seriously, when the retail price for the basic version is $34.99, I have to ask the publishers "I'm buying three copies, what more do you want? I am not selling a kidney to get a Harry Potter book!" I still want to know if the price increase is because it's longer or just because they know people will pay it.
I have the groovy supercool edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, but it was $18.50 at Borders - our local store ordered too many a few years back. It had a drawing of Harry by JK Rowling in the front, which was cool.
They made one for Chamber of Secrets, too, but it was $75 so I didn't get it. Then they completely changed the style of the Special Editions with the fifth book which encouraged me to not buy any more of them. (I don't think they did special versions for #3 and #4 in the US.)
He was on Extras this week, trying to pick up chicks. He ended up flinging a condom onto Diana Rigg. It was funny, but not as funny as Ricky Gervais kicking a dwarf.
There's a description in the comments on the Amazon page: "Firstly, the cover art is completely different. The deluxe edition comes in a slipcase, with artwork on the front and back of the case, and a facsimile of J.K. Rowling's signature on the top. Unwrap it, slip the book out of the case, and the same artwork, minus the borders and lettering, is on the dust jacket. The book's cover is all black with the title information in vertical lettering on the spine (just like the 'spine' of the slip case, but in metallic purple instead of gold). The black cover material is acid-free. The paper the book is printed on is also acid-free. Open the book and you will find the color artwork from the regular edition's dust jacket has been used for the endsheets of the deluxe edition, minus the title, author, and publisher information. The front cover art is the front endsheet, and the back cover art is the back endsheet. In addition, a unique color frontispiece illustration is on the page facing the title page. At the beginning, or head, of each of the 30 chapters there is a small illustration, just like in the regular edition. However, at the back of the book each of these illustrations has been enlarged and given a page of its own, with a cutline describing it."
