Study finds U.S. bias against women in science

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Women are being filtered out of high-level science, math and engineering jobs in the United States, and there is no good reason for it, according to a National Academies report released on Monday.

A committee of experts looked at all the possible excuses -- biological differences in ability, hormonal influences, childrearing demands, and even differences in ambition -- and found no good explanation for why women are being locked out.

"Compared with men, women faculty members are generally paid less and promoted more slowly, receive fewer honors, and hold fewer leadership positions," the Academies said in a statement. "These discrepancies do not appear to be based on productivity, the significance of their work, or any other performance measures."...

Blah blah blah.... This one's kind of a no duh, but it's nice to see someone's actually done the research on what we all know.

P.S.

Dear Lawrence Summers, ex-president of Harvard,

Pwned!!!!

XOXOXOX

Well... Women are treated like that in France, too. We're supposed to be baby machines, oops, I mean mothers, not scientists or executives or politicians. And I honestly think it's getting worse... Women are more and more brainwashed into having kids and think that a career isn't key to your happiness in life.

I usually regard Europe as about 20 years ahead of us in all things--but not this area. When I was in grad school, one of the worst fools I had to deal with was a postdoc from Holland. My advisor (a ripely sexist SOB himself) patiently explained that "Where Anton comes from, women aren't professors, they're just lab techs."

This kind of reminds me of this study that was done at OSU here in town a couple years back (not a scientific one--it was more like a legal inquiry) that purported to find that student athletes (i.e. football players) were not treated any differently than other students academically.

To which I, and anyone who attended a high school where sports were more important than anything else, will cheerfully to by saying, "Bullshit!"
