Dear Pat Buchanan:

You're an idiot.

Handily, much of the decennials' pop reports are online in pdf form should you want to peruse:

http://www.census.gov/prod/www/abs/decennial/index.htm

What I don't like is that in 2010 the long form of the decennial census will cease.

The American Community Survey (emphasis on word survey), which has been around for a few years and is now usable for data on populations in areas of 65,000+ in population will catch up and in 2010 cover ALL areas in their data sets.

Thing is, you had a 1:4 chance of getting the decennial long form...you will have a 1:6 chance of getting the American Community Survey. So we're cutting down our survey sample for the "long form" by a *huge* margin.

My grandpa was an immigrant, darn it! He was from Lithuania, and was a church organist by trade. This is an immigrant nation! If Grandpa hadn't taken a BIG chance and come here, I'd still be in Lithuania, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have had the opportunities I've had here, to lead the kind of life I want. So yaaay, immigrants!

Omg.. Pat Buchanan freaked me out when he was on the Glenn Beck program. I don't think he's an idiot but I would like to know more about him.

Legal immigrants are fine and dandy, Illegal immigrants should be stopped. If they aren't willing to take the time to come in the country legally, I don't want them here.

I'm for sealing the borders (this does not mean stopping LEGAL immigration).

Check out this zogby article:

http://www.zogby.com/soundbites/ReadClips.dbm?ID=4935

"Most of those that emigrated from Mexico became naturalized US citizens and have become productive citizens. Unfortunately, some embittered intellectuals (on both sides of the border) have advocated that most of the southwest US belongs to Mexico. "

A lot of people are coming here to reclaim 'their' land, not to become US citizens and that's a huge issue.

I don't understand why people can't understand this is a matter of security and the Mexicans coming here illegally are being treated poorly. They are getting paid less than an American would ... so why is everyone for that? They're practically a slave class. It's not fair to the illegal immigrants to be treated as less than people and it's not safe for our country to just let people in who want to see the US land in Mexico's hands.

What about terrorists? They could easily come across the borders too.

Hey Pat Buchanan: to a large extent, enslaved people built this country and most hispanic people have ancestors that predate your paltry half-century of occupation by 15,000 years. Get over yourself.

I had no idea. We work with Census data a lot. Since we use an administrative database (ie, Medicare claims), we have to use census tract averages to plug in stuff like education and income levels for our patients. But, the quality of the data has declined over the last 5 years, and now I see it's gonna sink some more. *sigh* Just more BAD NEWS.

He was on Bill Maher show this week, and some of the stuff he said seemed, well, bullshit. He gave the raw number of immigrants, and said it was the highest in the nation's history. Well, duh, but now there's 300 million people here, so what's the number as a percentage of the population? So I looked it up. He seems like his deal is more scaring people than dealing with a complex and important issue.

A lot of people are coming here to reclaim 'their' land, not to become US citizens and that's a huge issue.

That seems a bit insane. They come to the US because they want LA to be just like Tijuana? How many is "a lot?" I grew up in SoCal, and knew bajillions of Chicano kids, but I never met a single one who wanted to live in the United States of Mexico.

See? That's the thing that sets off my liberal rant mode. Bush does it too! There's an assumption that "we" are all a bunch of White people, and not just white people, but from a very confined bit of Europe that evidently doesn't include the Iberian peninsula. You've heard Bush's constant rant about Iraq that "SOME SAY brown people don't want democracy." Um, brown people? Have you looked out the window lately?

When you say immigrants... do you mean actual immigrants (Legal).. or illegal? I just want to be sure.

I don't think the issue is so complex. People are coming here illegally and shouldn't be. Least in my opinion.

Did you read the article I posted? There are people who believe that parts of the United States really belongs to Mexico. I forget what the poll numbers were, but it was eye opening. Plus with that rally in Maywood... it's defiantely out there. During that rally the illegal immigrants took down the American flag and raised the Mexican one..

Pat didn't specify.

I don't think the issue is so complex. People are coming here illegally and shouldn't be. Least in my opinion.

If you're here illegally, then, yep, you're breaking the law. But, for example, there's a lot of businesses in the US that pretty much couldn't function as they currently do without illegal immigrants. Not just agricultural workers, I mean the restaurant industry, the hotel industry, the meat packing industry. If you ever go to WalMart to buy a cheap TV, they've gotten in trouble numerous times for having contractors bring in illegal immigrants to clean their stores. Yeah, we could totally crack down on Walmart, but then poor people would have a harder time affording groceries. So, yeah, it's complex too.

Did you read the article I posted?

The guy from the Sierra Times? Dude, they're crackpots. One of their current articles include "Islam disgusts me."

There are people who believe that parts of the United States really belongs to Mexico. I forget what the poll numbers were, but it was eye opening.

It's a little nutty. We stole that land fair and square. ^_^ Get over it already.

Like i said, it's not as if a bunch of people want LA to become *just like* Mexico City. I mean, if that were true, why would they bother to come to the US in the first place?

Plus with that rally in Maywood... it's defiantely out there. During that rally the illegal immigrants took down the American flag and raised the Mexican one.

Do you remember the black separatist from the 60s? It scared the shit out of a lot of people at the time. And, where are they now? That didn't really go anywhere. I doubt this will either. Aztlan's been around since I was a kid, at least the 1960s, as part of the whole Chicano rights thing. I'm sure you can look for individuals in MEChA who've said crazy shit over the years. But the people who seem to love to drum up fear about them, like Michelle "Internment camps are really keen!" Malkin actually scare me more.

"The guy from the Sierra Times? Dude, they're crackpots. One of their current articles include "Islam disgusts me.""

Do you have a link to it or is it "Excuse Me, But Islam Disgusts Me" by Dorothy A. Seese? I don't know how you can call everyone involved in that site a crackpot based on one article. No one two people think exactly alike.

For the most part.. I didn't see anything too nutty in that article until around the end when she starts talking about the apocalypse. She was obviously frustrated at the time she made this and definately could have made a better point if she'd cut out more of her ranting.

I do find it rather annoying how the muslims can call us "the great Satan" but if the pope quotes somebody he has to apologize for it? I'm not even Catholic and that just doesn't seem right. Many muslims got upset... over a cartoon. It's insanity.

Sure, there are plenty of good muslims out there and I would definately love to hear more from them.

We're still dealing with the effects of that era. Oftentimes when an African American is arrested, or told to do something as "please stop bouncing that ball in the store" they'll try and blame it on the race card. Sometimes, race is involved but a lot of the time it has nothing to do with race at all and people STILL play the race card.

There are so many examples I can think of like New Orleans. Several places were hit by the same hurricane and New Orleans in the only one that's been chalking it up to racism. Mayor Ray Neagan and his statements about New Orleans will be a "chocolate town" again..

That congresswoman who claimed security stopped her because she was black when in reality she did not have her identification.

The list goes on and on. This problem isn't solved yet.

Don't get me wrong I know there are good people in every group we've discussed but we can't just ignore that we have problems either.

And we can't pick cotton without slaves.

Hi, now I'm offended.

Which is nothing compared to the white race card of seeing/saying/doing something blatantly racist and then denying it happened. Read and learn: http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?ItemID=10157

A paragraph that points out a HUGE part of why the idea that blacks are making a big deal of nothing really chaps my ass:

"But the obvious question is this: if we [white people] have never seen racism as a real problem, contemporary to the time in which the charges are being made, and if in all generations past we were obviously wrong to the point of mass delusion in thinking this way, what should lead us to conclude that now, at long last, we've become any more astute at discerning social reality than we were before? Why should we trust our own perceptions or instincts on the matter, when we have run up such an amazingly bad track record as observers of the world in which we live? In every era, black folks said they were the victims of racism and they were right. In every era, whites have said the problem was exaggerated, and we have been wrong."

Yes, there are some black people that claim racism when it's not. But there a LOT more whites that see or hear about something flat out racist and claim that PoC are making a big deal out of nothing because they don't think it's a problem, like we have no idea how racism works and they have to be told if something is or isn't like a little child.

There are so many examples I can think of like New Orleans. Several places were hit by the same hurricane and New Orleans in the only one that's been chalking it up to racism. Mayor Ray Neagan and his statements about New Orleans will be a "chocolate town" again.

You mean the same New Orleans where many of the poor minority people who lived there can't return because, over a year later, there have been no efforts to clean up their communities? The same new Orleans where blacks seen with food were looting and whites with food were foraging? The Same New Orleans that has lost a huge part of its minority population and that they are making little to no effort to bring back? Oh, but the French Quarters open and people say it's fine, so it's all fine now! *stare*

That congresswoman who claimed security stopped her because she was black when in reality she did not have her identification.

And the one who was referred to as looking like a "ghetto slut" because her hair did not conform to European standards of beauty? But that's not racist, now is it? I mean, when people say "ghetto" nowadays they're totally talking about the Jews in Europe and not trying to evoke images of poor black women with too many children (too many being more than the powers that be would like to see).

Sorry to get into this on your journal, Tiki, but I am not going to let blatantly nasty things about my race go by unchecked.

I clearly stated that I'm against slavery.

Don't get me wrong I know there are good people in every group we've discussed but we can't just ignore that we have problems either.

If you would have taken the time to actually read what I said you might not have gotten offended.

There are good and bad people in every race. I never once said that any race is better than any other. I wish we did live in a colorblind society and hopefully one day it will be.

Date: 2006-09-18 12:57 am (UTC)

So if you're against slavery, why did you even MENTION that slaves picked cotton? I'm pretty sure you could have made the same point without even saying that.

I read what you said. And I saw a lot of "boy the black people are making a big deal out of everything even when it means nothing (to me)" undertone. Pointing out the very nasty things you said to claim that blacks are making big deals out of nothing like it's some sort of problem that black people and other PoC point out racist actions is not misunderstanding you whatsoever.

Subtle, underhanded prejudice is STILL prejudice, and it's all over your comment. In my opinion, it's actually worse seeing that than blatant racism because the blatant racists don't claim that they're trying to make everything fair and "colorblind" when they're saying what they do.

And do NOT look past race. It's rude. Acknowledge it. When people advocate colorblindness, they are more likely than not advocating that PoC toss out their ethnicity and act like everyone else --aka White Europeans.

I brought up slavery because we were talking about illegal immigrants (having to pick strawberries, lettuce, etc) whom I feel are being abused like the slaves were.

Some Black people make a big deal out of nothing, like some White people make a big deal out of nothing... there are always some people that make a big deal out of nothing and it doesn't matter what race they are. There are some in every group.

The problem with your arguement is I admire some people from the black community, I have black friends, and I shouldn't have to say that everytime I bring up certain topics.

You shouldn't look at color. Martin Luther King himself (whom I admire) spoke about living in a colorblind society where a person would "not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character". That's what I want too.

What's wrong with that?

Classic 4.c (http://coffeeandink.livejournal.com/607897.html) reply when trying to shut down racism talks. It's a warning sign to a great many PoC when people trot out the fact that they have black friends/live in black areas/sleep with black people/met a black person once in order to shut down being called on their prejudice, much in the same way it raises warnings to gays who hear "I have gay friends" from people who make no effort whatsoever to help give them civil rights.

MLK was not a single soundbite that can be cut down to "don't look at color." He said he wanted people to respect his four children instead of dismissing them because of their blackness. He did not say ignore it altogether. I am disgusted that people seem to think a lifetime of working towards civil rights for blacks and all people can be cut down to "ignore race." You know what else MLK said?
