Basically, Takara wants us dead. This is the only explanation.

Are Modern Pets the same as Dream Pets, or a rival line?

Also, WE WANTSSSSS IT!

I'm not familiar with Dream Pets. Modern Pets is a Japanese line Sanrio-ish cute-itude:

Aha! Thank you. It's a similar, rival line, then.

The official Dream Pets site seems to be gone, but here's a fan site:

The old ones are harder to find, of course. The new line apparently didn't do too well. (Most of mine came from a dollar clearance sale.) Flying Tiger is one of the best stuffies I've got -- charming design, vivid color, and of course goggles make any toy better. Except toy goggles, which would just be redundant and confusing.

bean's vol. 8 has a really good overview of both old and new.

I remember when I used to play with "rika-chan ningyo" when I was a girl in Japan. I'm assuming they've upgraded their products to cater to adults now? Do little girls still play with Licca dolls?

The word I heard was that up until recently, it was kinda bizarre for grownups to be collecting dolls in Japan (and actually, elsewhere in Asia too). Around maybe 10 years ago, male "hobbyists" started getting into collecting Jenny dolls, the prices for the older ones started going up, and you started to see Takara (now Takara/Tomy) produce spendy dollies for grownup collectors.

As for whether kiddies still play with her, ya got me!! In the USA, nowadays, girls older than 7 or so spurn Barbie. Takara still makes "play line" dollies, but I don't know who's buying.

Well, that and they want to move onto boys by grade 4. I've seen it in motion, and after growing up in a generation that played with their Barbies/toys until they were 12 or even older during the 90's, it's wierd. Where did this suddenly come from?

Love her! Too bad she's at least 13,000 yen on auction. >_>;

It's interesting how Takara picked a 4th gen Licca body instead of a 1st gen repro one for that 1st gen repro head. I rather like it, though at the same time it also makes her a lot different than the repros I'm used to.

Ah! Actually, I'm liking it a lot more than most repros. I wonder if the different body is the reason why? I'm just not keen on the older "bowl legged" bodies.

I'm hoping my affection will die down before I'm tempted to spill the money!
