Death of 'Crocodile Hunter' filmed
NEW YORK - "If I'm going to die," the late "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin said in a 2002 interview, "at least I want it filmed."
He spoke with his usual humor, and clearly had no idea what would happen four years later. But the fact is, a tape does exist of Irwin's fatal encounter with a stingray while filming a TV show. And so the question arises: In the age of instant Web videos, might it get out? And in the broader sense, is making footage of a death public ever justified?
We were going to say, hope somebody finds the footage and burns it. But, according to Olbermann's show just now, following Irwin's wishes, his family actually wants the footage released.

Date: 2006-09-06 03:28 am (UTC)The thing that bugs me, as nutty as his detractors say he was, he was NOT provoking anything.. he was just swimming and surprsed the stingray.. unfortunately it was one of the largest species with a 12-15in barb. =( A completely freak accident.
It seems that if the weather wasn't such crap on the other show he was trying to film, he wouldn't have taken to the ocean to work on Bindi's program.. =( I really feel for his family both his actual & extended everyone that worked with them are truely heart-broken over this whole thing.
I really didn't want to believe it happened.
