tikistitch: (bears of death)

Long-time readers know of the joy that emits when we detect Lilo & Stitch's subversive influence in the popular culture. Thus, we weep with joy when we found out, thank to [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily that the most recent issue of Warren Ellis's comic book title, Nextwave, features as incidental players a swarm of psychotic, and very BLUE, koalas. You can view some of the relevant panels here. (Or just go buy the damned comic!)

NOTE FOR THE ANAL-RETENTIVE: According to the knowledgeable [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily crowd, the animals in question are not strictly koalas, but rather something called "drop bears," which, according to the indispensible Wikipedia, are evidently legendary Ozzie creatures (think marsupial jackalopes with pointed teeth). We see, however, no reference to drop bears having a blue tint, specifically, dark blue with a lighter blue underside. We also bought the b&w variant issue, the better to customize in our new fluffy friends.

I'd never heard of them either, and we spent 6 weeks travelling around Australia.

I've heard of dropbears and a few other Australian mythical creatures. As far as I know, they're mostly reserved for teasing clueless tourists.

Drop bears are real. Oh yes. In fact, one lives in the gumtree in my backyard. :) He is very nice, so long as you don't stand under his tree, but he's not as cute and cuddly as the possum who lives in the vine which grows along our driveway.

You have a dropbear *and* a possum? You lucky, lucky girl! You don't have a wombat too, do you?

Nope. No wombats. I prefer possums anyway. So cute with they pink nosies. And they gripping hands. And they peeing in the roof. :) Wombats grow too big, and are grumpy and dangerous. And their digging!

Aw, cutie possum. We have some in the city, but they're shy.

I swear, Australians have the *cutest* critters in the world! Somewhere around here, I have a picture of me holding a koala bear (a real koala bear, not a drop bear). You've seen my default picture, right?

Poor Mr. Tiki was awfully jet-lagged that day, and he had to follow his crazy wife around as she squealed and threatened to bring everything home.

Hi, yes, I have seen your feeding the 'roos picture. I hope they were well-behaved, sometimes they get nasty and attack people. And koalas can also be vicious, my husband saw a tourist pick up a koala (who was asleep and not expecting it) and the koala let the tourist know exactly what it thought about being picked up and cuddled by a stranger. Not a pretty sight. I like possums. They just pee on you and hiss. :) And I am terrified of emus.

Mr Tiki has my sympathies...I remember being jetlagged in San Francisco and freaking out because the cars were coming at me the wrong way.
