OK, so we're a teensy bit paranoid about Bird Flu.

The lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] jmhm just posted this terrific linkee from Making Light regarding bird flu, what a virus does, and how to make a handy, at-home preparation kit (including keeping fuzzy kitties around--so this has gotta be good advice).

EDIT: Just received this email:

We have had 5 confirmed Influenza A cases at Hall Health [the UW student health center], offering antivirals when a patient presents within 48 hours of onset of illness, providing masks for coughing patients, and encouraging handwashing for everyone. Contact public health if you see a flu-like illness in someone who works closely with poultry or has returned recently from an area with known Avian influenza. See more local information at:

My stepmom, who is recovering from this year's nasty Projectile Vomiting Flu, told me the best thing to lay in a supply of to safeguard against dehydration is PowerAde. She says she found the lemon-lime flavor the most palatable. It's got electrolytes and all that kind of good stuff in it, which is good to have when you're getting dehydrated.

I would perhaps add a TV and a cable/satellite hookup, as well as a VCR/DVD player/TiVO to the recommended list on the website. :) Plus a computer and the Intarnets if one feels up to sitting up.
