Koi... Mil Gaya
Feb. 21st, 2012 05:54 pmTrue love? Then THERE MUST BE A RAINSTORM. It's the law.
Arrright, anyone remember that zany movie, Krrish, I reviewed a couple weeks back? That was a sequel to THIS, which was also directed by Hrithik Roshan's dad, and also a mega- mega-hit. It's one of the most Frankenstenian of the films I've viewed so far, looking like they took bits from every hit of the last 20 years and stirred in Hrithik Roshan and some kids dancing. The best capsule I can do is: the first part is Forrest Gump meets Close Encounters, and then post-intermission it turns into ET meets Flowers for Algernon.
I viewed this movie with some trepidation: Hrithik plays a developmentally disabled young man. And Indian movies are, to put it mildly, not always PC. If you see a fat person, it's because they're a bully, or they're making fun of them. Or both.
But surprisingly, this part is well done! Hrithik plays Rohit very sweetly, but like a real live person, not an object of pity or scorn (though the character encounters both). There's even a romance, with Preity Zinta, an actress I hadn't seen before. That's her dancing with him up above in the inevitably Singin' in the Rain sequence, which includes some fun wire work.
The story is that Rohit's father was a space scientist trying to contact aliens. While Rohit's mom was pregnant, unfortunately, he actually SEES A SPACE SHIP, and crashes the car, killing him, and causing baby Hrithik to be mentally impaired. The whole first half of the movie is about Rohit's life, and meeting Nisha. Now, given what I've told you about Rohit's father, GUESS WHAT HAPPENS after the intermission.
And me: I liked this one. Not as much as Krrish, truth be told, due to the lack of all out batshit crazy. The mother character bugged me, as she did in Krrish - she seems like she's from another, more realistic film. But the female lead was very sweet (too bad her character was killed off for the second one). And this gets the award for best dancing in the rain sequence I've seen yet - and I've seen them all!
