Bollywood tales: Krrish
Jan. 27th, 2012 08:29 pmI've gone kinda nuts for Bollywood movies since we got back from India, so wanted to share a review. I mean, why not, there's no one around on LJ any more anyway....
I bought Krrish because it was available on Blu Ray, it was the top-grossing film at the time it was released (meaning hella popular) and it stars Hrithik Roshan, another recent obsession.
I believe this has got to be one of the supremely silliest movies ever made. This doesn't mean it's not enjoyable. I plan to watch it again. But I can also see why Indian movies don't always translate well overseas.
So, this is a sequel, and I didn't see the first one, so keep this in mind. Krishna is played by Hrithik Roshan. His father, Rohit, is ALSO played by Hrithik Roshan. I'm not sure why, because this seems to be a pretty common deal in Indian films.
Anyway, Krisha is supposed to have super powers inherited from Rohit, who got them from ALIENS FROM OUTER SPACE. We see in the prologue that the chubby little kid who plays Krishna is a super genius. And then, 2 minutes later, when we see grown-up Krishna, THIS IS ALL FORGOTTEN, as Hrithik plays the role as sorta sweetly stupid. Well, he's cute, so who cares.
Anyway, there's some girls from Singapore hanging out at some kind of kids camp for adults in Krishna's Indian village. Why? No fucking clue. And, one of them parachutes and gets stuck in a tree, so super-powered Krisna gets her down from the 1,000 foot high tree all the while they try to figure out WHO IS PRETTIER. Then there's a bunch of silly comedy slapstick, and two dance numbers, and Krishna realizes HE IS IN LOOOOOVE!
But, the cute chick goes back to Singapore, where her bitchy boss FIRES HER ASS. Because, SHE'S A BITCH! But, cute chick's best pal decides they need to get Krishna to Singapore, because that will somehow get their jobs back. So, Krisna takes off his country clown pants and puts on a cool duster coat and comes to town.
So then of course they GO TO THE CIRCUS. Because that's how they do. And Krishna dances for the cute chick. Because Indians with super-powers? THEY DANCE! (I've posted the video of this above. You can see that though Hritik can dance his ass off, the cute chick is sorta faking it, but that's ok, 'cause she's cute.)
But then, FIRE! And, unfortunately, all the parents evidently scramble out and leave their kids to a fiery death. Tough luck kids! BUT! Krishna has promised his grandma he will NEVER SHOW off his super powers. He must rescue the kids, but NOT ATTRACT ATTENTION? But how????
OH, I KNOW! HE grabs a CARNIVAL MASK and A COOL MATRIX LEATHER COAT! No one will EVER notice him now.
And so he rescues the kids. Oh, and did I mention there's an EVIL MADMAN! BWA-HA-HA! Because, there is. As it turns out, Krishna's father, Rohit (remember him?) built a SUPER COMPUTER for the EVIL GUY. And what did this computer do? It saw ... THE FUTURE!
But, at the last minute, Rohit figured out that Evil Guy was, you know, EVIL, so he destroyed the super computer before Evil Guy could use it (evidently Rohit was a little more on the ball than Krishna). Unfortunately for Rohit, Evil Guy couldn't figure out how to give his brand new, rebuilt super computer a NEW PASSWORD, so he keeps Rohit prisoner until the new computer is built, so Rohit can input the password. Or, something.
Anyways, Krishna goes apeshit and starts running parcourse through downtown Singapore in his Krrish outfit (the mask and Matrix coat, remember?). Because THAT'S HOW THEY DO, if they're Indian superheroes. So, after he's done running on top of cars and diving off the ends of piers and other cool shit, then he has to fight A TEAM OF NINJA, because Evil Guy happens to have them.
And then Krishna makes the evil lair and fights minions and stuff and rescues his dad (who's really him) plus the cute chick (not sure how she got kidnapped, must've forgotten a plot twist) and they all go back to India, where they reunite with grandma and all say hi to the alien who gave Rohit his superpowers originally and started this mess, yay!
And there they remain, waiting for the sequel.
Wonder if Hrithik will play his own grandson, because that will be kewl.

Date: 2012-01-28 04:47 pm (UTC)One of our local theatres seems to show Indian movies from time to time. I keep meaning to check them out, but I'm always afraid that I'll accidentally get tix for a serious Indian movie instead of the awesome dancing and singing ones.

Date: 2012-01-28 06:39 pm (UTC)We have a bollywood cable channel I think. I gotta check into subscribing. I'm not sure everyone is like this, but it's difficult for me NOT to be happy when I'm watching anything this silly.
