If you loved that website you should run to your local christian bookstore and pick up:

Teaching captivity? How the pro-gay agenda is affecting our schools-- and how you can make a difference. Colorado Springs, Colo.: Focus on the Family, c2000.

I kid you not, the subject heading is: "Homosexuality |x Study and teaching (Elementary) |z United States" because as we all know, they teach them there kids to be gay in those there schools.

One of my bestest friends, who's gay, has also been in the "Big Brother" program for longer than either of us would care to remember. He's been mentor to several little boys, all of whom are now young adults. And ALL of them are 100% STRAIGHT HETEROSEXUAL DATING WOMEN BREEDER types. Where did he go wrong???

A gay mentor theoretically has very little influence on the sexual orientation of a child, assuming there is no sexual activity between the two.

Yes yes, it's highly controversial. I don't even think it's discussed openly.

...but there are some who believe (and I would love to see extensive academic research on this) that a lot--BUT NOT ALL--of our sexual identity comes from our initial sexual bonding and experiences. If so, then having an inappropriate childhood sexual experience with a figure of authority has the possibility of really messing someone up (for example, Catholic priests), mixed in with violence (such as in cases of incest from a violent home)... or a Big Brother mentor.

That said, if there is no inappropriate sexual behavior between a mentor and a child, I see how reason why the sexual orientation of the mentor should somehow affect the sexual orientation of the pupil/protege.

Am I getting too deep here? I think I'm rambling.

PS: James Dobson may have some views I don't agree with, but for the most part he is spot-on about his beliefs in the importance of active parenting and intact homes.

I've done some real academic research, not about bonding, but about hormones. Enough to believe that sexual orientation is 100% determined by prenatal, biological influences. I'll say it again: 100%.

And I can tell you from personal experience, I knew I liked boys from the time I was a little girl. And of the gay boys I know, and I know a *lot* of gay boys, ALL of them "knew" when they were kids. And NONE of them were molested. A lot of them have 100% straight brothers and sisters, and perfectly loving families.

Dobson is a bigot.

I've done some real academic research...

Coolness!! Anything published that I can read???

Dobson is a bigot.

Hmmm... I did not know this. My only exposure to him is hearing his occasional daily snippets where he gives 58 seconds of his advice or thoughts on a particular topic.

Can you point me to some examples?? Thanks.

Well, Dobson recently compared embryonic stem cell research with Nazi "research." This pisses me off for two reasons: one is, when you bring out Nazis, it usually means you're run out of arguments. The other is, I have friends who've had babies through IVT clinics.

Well, in the meantime I hope they pass legislation heavily promoting umbillical stem cell research. Nobody seems to mind it, and there seems to be some great potential there. Instead of butting heads about embryonic stem cell research, and not getting anywhere, I say let's at least move forward on the areas everyone can agree on.

Well, poo, my favorite paper is no longer online, or at least I can't find it. Ever read the Journal of Applied Biobehavioral Research, hahaha?

Here's an abstract from Medline:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=retrieve&db=pubmed&list_uids=12576122&dopt=Abstract

I'm currently doing cancer research, which is far afield from the obesity stuff, but most of the papers are still in press.

Mr Dobson's daily snippets are, on the whole, reasonable, if rather stiff. It's just, y'know, everything else that he's ever said or done that makes me want to introduce him to carnal relations with a Garden Weasel.

While I don't agree with the extremist rhetoric that gays are somehow turning schoolchildren into little gaylets by simply educating them about it, I do also see why the right are upset. While moderate and liberal society considers "gayness" to be one of mere status (that is, "I am gay"), some on the right consider "gayness" to be attained only through action. Thus by teaching schoolchildren about gayness, they argue, "the gay" are promoting their own "lifestyle."

A similar argument can be made of polygamists (and it's an argument many anti-gay marriage groups use as an example). If you teach schoolchildren about the polygamist lifestyle, you are somehow advocating/promoting it. And polygamists would argue that theirs is not a "lifestyle choice" but a covenant from god, and a part of the very fiber of their being. We're not talking some kind of New Age open-minded polyamory here; we're talking backwoods Utah former-Mormons who have broken away from the Latter-Day Saitns for being "too mainstream" and caving to the non-believers (that is, the bulk of American Judeo-Christianity).

My friends, Lance and Brian, have been together longer than me and my husband. I'm afraid it's impossible for me to believe that they are sinning in God's eyes.

And I think that's what, in my mind, differentiates the fundamentalist from the mainstream Christians. One adheres to a strict reading of the scriptures, while the other has a looser interpretation.

Damn, I wanna live on the West Coast... I'm no longer thrilled with annoyance at Focus on the Family, because, dude, all the parents here read it like, my whole childhood.

On the other hand, though, I really must defend FoF for being, honestly, the MOST sensitive of all that sort of Christian parenting crap. "Homosexual therapy" suggestions aside, Dobson often takes a very nuturing, permissive, understanding stance... compared to some of the real "spare the rod, spoil the child" hardasses in the world of Christian parenting lit. He's not an asshole -- I've even benefitted from some of his suggestions when I was young. (Well, one: There's no shame in saying "I'm sorry.")

Dogma IS dogma -- you just can't magically make conservative Christians accept homosexuality or abortion if they're religiously against it. Having grown up around Christians with real religious conviction -- not just "rar everyone but us are bad," but genuine faith and caring -- and I think a lot of liberal people overlook that. Although everyone likes to tease Christians for trying to convert others, I've had friends who were genuinely troubled and worried for the fate of my soul. Stupid, to me, but they actually CARED... they weren't in it for the brownie points or societal acceptance... I'm sure you already know all of this, but it can be disheartening.

But anyway, James Dobson is misguided, but he's not a total asshole -- he's no Jerry Falwell, that's for damn sure.

And I want rainbow Stitches! I wan teeeeeensy, tiny, capsule-sized plush ones. On a string. XD
