Monsters vs. Aliens reaction
Mar. 15th, 2009 10:33 amAs stated in the title, this is not really a review, for reasons that will be stated later. Should be non-spoilery, but I'm putting it all under a cut, so as not to annoy.
Monsters! Aliens! 3D! It would really be hard to engineer a more tempting film, but then you plop Colbert and Dr. House into the mix? Dang.
Thing is, we saw this in the company of a buddy who was interested in the marketing aspect. So, that kind of colored the experience. We kept finding ourselves viewing from the perspective no of, "Is this a kick ass movie?" but rather, "So, is this property gonna sell toys?"
And, well, to both questions, maybe not. It's not Wall E, but then it's probably not supposed to be. The little kids in the audience seemed a bit perplexed. Like Shrek, this is more pointed to adults, and crammed with references to other movies. It was pretty cute. But, we didn't get the feeling it's going to be a breakout hit like Shrek.
The blob character was pretty fun. As for voice work, it sounds like Rainn Wilson had a lot of fun doing the alien overlord.

Date: 2009-03-17 01:10 am (UTC)The movie seemed more targetted for adults with humorous references to tons of other movies from Dr Strangelove to Star Wars, but hey I can almost behave like an adult sometimes. The story arc is not as endearing as Shrek or the Incredibles, but hey it's Monsters AND Aliens all in one movie. My main complaint was that there was only one Alien (and his clones), so I think the plural in the title is misleading to us Extra Terrestrial fans.
I'll go see it again, and plan on getting all the toys. BTW, the Happy Meal toys come to McD's at the end of the month, so LMK if I should pick you up a set (I befriended the Manager at the local McD's with one of my SW Medallions last promotion ;-)
Ack, Ack, Ack!
