So, that little boy who was her friend, was he made up for the movie? I read the book a couple years back. I remember the cat, but I honestly don't remember Wybie.

yes he was made up for the film, otherwise it would have been weird for Coraline to be talking to herself all the time since the book was mainly internal narration, I think.

OK, thanks! And that explains what the character was doing. I must admit, though I really really liked the movie, one quibble was that I was a little miffed by having a boy come in and "rescue" her at a couple points.
