Fanboys: the review
Feb. 6th, 2009 10:16 amLet's just say, it exceeded our expectations, which were admittedly pretty low.
Got together with our fave-est geeks in the universe, the SARLACC crew. We don't have a real Star Wars movie to line up for this year, so give us a break. Met at Two Bells in Belltown for some beer and pub grub. Really convinced our waitperson was a zombie, or at least undead.
After several jokes about bringing along a couch or a megaphone, we ambled over to Cinerama. Saw 501st guys as expected. As not expected, there was actually a little crowd. Maybe call it a "crowd-let." At least it wasn't totally empty, like at the midnite show of Clone Wars we attended some months back.
As for the movie, this is one fans have been hearing about for like 197 years now, so we weren't really expecting much. The one review we had seen rated it at one and a half stars. Surprisingly, we found it fairly low key and charming. It came off a little disjointed, but only a little. Some niggles: yeah, yeah, Star Wars fans and Star Trek fans don't like each other. We geddit. Also, the nerd boys all looked like nerd boys, but the "nerd girl" was played by the gorgeous Veronica Mars chick. We mean, she's not Michael Bay level improbable-looking, but still.
It's hard to put a rating on something like this, but if you have a group of Star Wars fans, it would be fun to catch in a theater together, maybe at matinee prices. Otherwise, no great loss if you catch it on cable.
Also, we totally didn't fall asleep, which we did with Clone Wars. Maybe it was the beer.

Date: 2009-02-06 09:29 pm (UTC)I had a chance to see a free screening last year, but didn't have any reliable way of getting out to Thousand Oaks and back. Would have at least been interesting to see all the changes they've made.
Side note on mention of Star Wars vs. Star Trek fans: Ever seen "Free Enterprise"?
