Many people were asking if McGoohan would be in the new version of The Prisoner that finished filming last month. Others speculated that he would be in no condition to do so. That really was the case, I guess. It's either fitting or sad that he won't at least see the new version.
According to someone posting on the AMC blog for the new Prisoner series (where I now learn that McGoohan was asked to play a role and he wanted to but couldn't travel to Africa where they were filming), one of the last things McGoohan said was, "I will always be a number."
It's too bad he won't at least have a cameo in the new series, but you're right, maybe that's fitting. It's one of those things though, I wonder why they're bothering with a remake? This was arguably the greatest TV show of all time. It's not likely they're going to top it.
Well, the new version of Survivors wasn't too bad thus far (first season was eight episodes). It skipped some topics of basic survival that the original series made sure to touch upon (e.g., how to store grain properly to prevent fatal poisoning), but also touched on topics the original did not (e.g., what happens to a schizophrenic who doesn't have meds anymore).
I imagine a new version of The Prisoner can look at life from a modern perspective and still pull off the idea, in a way modern audiences can better relate to. They insist this is not a remake (like Survivors was; indeed some early lines of Survivors were exactly the same), but a whole new take on the concept (given that 1960s secret agents aren't the sort of characters modern audiences will relate with).
Is this new Prisoner series going to be British-made then? Then, yeah, it has a chance. If Hollywood has anything to do with it, it'll more than likely be crap.

As for Montalban -- great anecdotes here: http://froynlaven.blogspot.com/2009/01/eternal-rest-grant-unto-him-o-lord-and.html
