I don't know if there's any canonical explanation, 'cuz I can't read the Japanese sites. The show basically reboots to where Stitch lands in Okinawa instead of Hawaii. Though, they have some weird leftovers from Lilo & Stitch, like his name (duh!) and using the word "Ohana." But, I figure most everybody but me who watches the show is a 6-year old, so they don't really care & just wanna see Stitch make chaos.
I did get to meet Chris Sanders at a con, and he said he thought the idea of Stitch meeting a karate girl was pretty cool. "Why didn't *I* think of that?"
