So, this is one of those Stitch dishwear sets in a box that they make like a zillion kajillion of in Japan. We grabbed this specific one because, amusingly, the mug looks like a beer stein. Stitchie beer, heh.

So, anyways, there's the mug (which is actually ceramic) and then the little wicker basket-y thing. Our question is, what's the leetle basket for? Seems like it's too roundy-bottomed to be a coaster. Does it cover your beer? Does it hold your peanuts? Ashtray? WTF?? (Alternatively, if you honestly don't know but still can't resist bloviating, please be creative, e.g., "It's a high tech wicker beret to prevent the CIA from transmitting thoughts into your brain!")

Oh, and here's a CU on the label. It just mostly says "Experiment 626" over and over and over. Like, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." Hee. This is a pretty fun set.

EDIT: As it turns out, this isn't a mug set at all, it's a planter!!! See comments. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] wintersweet!!!

That looks like a green tea strainer to me. :)

Ah, so this is supposed to be a teacup set!

I've actually seen a mug with a ceramic cone filter that says (according to the translation program) it's a Stitch "herb tea set."

twotone: A toy figure in a penguin costume is dismayed. It stands next to a mug with a penguin illustration and a broken handle. (Default)

I think it's for otsumami, or little snacks that you have with your beer. Traditional Japanese otsumami include spicy stuff and savory stuff.

So, I guess the deal is you're supposed to plant edamame seeds in the beer mug part, and then you can serve them in the little basket! Neat!

S. (twitter, blog) says it's for putting edamame and other snacks in, like at an izakaya, while you drink your beer.

Here's a kit where they seem to be selling one along with a beer-glass-shaped mini ceramic planter so you can grow your own edamame: http://www.m-workshop.co.jp/cat3/cat6/20080521_192634.php

It actually looks like your set.

Oh, so this is actually a *planter*! Cool.

I'm just dumbfounded they would make anything that specific with Stitch.

S. sent me a ton of links, so it seems to be an extremely trendy item right now. Go figure!

Maybe Japan's answer to the worldwide financial meltdown: grow your own beer snackies! Or something like that. ^_^

Fascinating! Thanks for the info!!

At very first glance, until I read your post & all the comments, I thought it was like a girly/ladies scented candle and a powder puff.
