Is that really a history so much as an old person rambling nostalgically, particularly about their own location, though? Interspersed randomly with interviews with online teenagers?

Not saying it's necessarily incorrect in tone; it's been around my f-list a lot lately. I particularly liked the bit about goth simultaneously being an expression and a cure for alienation.

I agree. (Twitter limits to 140 characters, including the link. So, I couldn't say, "Here's one person's take on the history of goth, which may not (and probably will not) jibe with what you or anyone else thinks about it.") As the person who sent it commented, the best stuff is in the personal history at the very beginning: black looks cool, but also works if you don't do your laundry as often as you should.

Exactly!

These things are why I can never understand the concept of "giving up" goth. I started wearing primarily black around puberty, when my innate clumsiness combined with rabidly growing boobs. And as I got older and more world-weary, and they got larger -- well, let's just say a cup of coffee is waaaay less noticeable on a black tee shirt than a white blouse.

With my black and pink, nowadays, I might not look elegant (unless one squints) but I look intentional, no?

I have managed to pull off a little quote to do with a goth with dandruff (don't ask):
"How can you appear so cold and emotionless when you look like a flipping lamington?!"

(If you know much about lamington cakes, you'll probably get the joke http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamington)
