OK, so here is the letter I've been composing in my head over lunchtime, while I was sifting through the racks at my local bankrupt record store (everybody, go buy Spoon's new CD, they're awesome!!).

The goal is to convey my Nazi squick, but also sound like a not-insane person, and also be clear enough that a non-English speaker won't be completely bamboozled. This is addressed to Madison at Magma Heritage, since he's the retailer who forwarded me the image.

Hi Madison!

Thankyou for forwarding the news about the upcoming Pullip, Beressa.

I find I am a little upset after looking at her picture, and I'm not sure whether to buy her. I wanted to write you about it.

Pullip is my favorite doll. So far, I've bought every single one of the Pullip dolls, including the limited ones I've been lucky to buy through Magma Heritage. I have posted pictures of all of my dolls on my web page (http://www.bobagirl.com), and I have persuaded several of my friends to start buying Pullips too.

But I'm not sure whether I can buy Beressa. I like cosplay uniforms, and I think it is a very cute idea to make a doll based on a policewoman. However, Beressa, to me, does not look like a Policewoman. Instead, I think her outfit resembles a Nazi SS uniform. For example, the insignia on the cap, and the red arm band look like details from a Nazi uniform to me. I think this is inappropriate. I have talked to other doll collectors in the USA, and they, too, are upset by this doll.

Do you know if there is anyone I could contact at Jun Planning, in order to express my opinions about Beressa? Perhaps if they heard from some collectors in the USA, they would want to change Beressa's outfit before she is released.

Thanks!

Pam

Good luck. I think it's worded well; however, I think they know perfectly well what it resembles, and that their target Japanese audience will snap it up. :/

I think it's really well written. Can't remember whether Madison referred to the doll as a policewoman or not, but by bringing it up and then gently refuting the point you've denied him an easy out.

I hope some good comes of this! And if you need a Japanese translator, please give me a shout!

Thanks. ^_^ Though I think the most likely outcome of all this is nothing at all. At least I got to vent!

I think that that is soo dissapointing that they would make a doll like that. the pullips are great. I think that you should send your letter. it really is well worded and makes alo of sense even if the could get the red arm band off her arm it would make so much of a difference!
oh yess and I love your new dolls they are soo cute!!!!(you have officially made me want to start collecting these) (o ya where can I buy them?)

Well, I sent a the email message to Madison. I intend to send a similar query to Rudi once he gets back from Japan--he might actually be a better bet, since he knows some folks at the toy companies over there, and may say how things work.

I've purchased most of mine from Rudi of R&D Dolls, but he's off on a trip to Japan right now. I've also purchased from Magma Heritage. You might go check out their web page, www.magmaheritage.com I think, to check out prices.
