“I was a lit major in college, and used to be [a] voracious book reader,” he wrote. “What happened?” He speculates on the answer: “What if I do all my reading on the web not so much because the way I read has changed, i.e. I’m just seeking convenience, but because the way I THINK has changed?”

Or, gosh, what if you, like, totally graduated from college and now live in a world where you're not required to read five novels a week and write papers on them, nor are you given the time to do this, because, hey, JOB AND FAMILY NOW. Dumbass.

I get worried because I do sometimes find it difficult to stay focused on a book (witness SOPHIE'S WORLD), but then again, it also seems to me that a lot of the books I've read lately have just not been that good.

I've read one genuinely good book this year--which I haven't yet reviewed--and I had no problem staying focused on that one when I was reading it. In fact, I finished reading it on the bus back to Tatebayashi from the Tokyo airport in early December. I was desperately tired and jet-lagged, and initially thought I would sleep, but I was at such a good point in the book that I just couldn't stop reading. :)
