That weird class meme-y thing
Jan. 2nd, 2008 01:34 pmSince everybody on the FL has been trashing/deconstructing this one:
Father went to college
Yup. Dad was actually the only person on either side of the family who'd graduated college.
Mother went to college
Yup, but after we (the kiddies) were in high school.
Have any relative who is an attorney, physician, or professor
I work for a physician/professor, does that count?
Actually, the odd thing Mr. Tiks and I have noticed when we wuz in gradual school was all the kids who went on to become professors generally had one or more 'rents who were already professors. Kinda odd.
Had more than 500 books in your childhood home
Boy, not sure if it was 500, but it was a lot. I had 500 vinyl record albums last I counted - does that count? Or does that deduct points for neural damage??
Were read children's books by a parent
Yup. And teachers.
Had lessons of any kind before you turned 18
I'm taking it they mean lessons = somebody who comes to your house and teaches you? Then, yeah, I had to suffer through piano lessons for several years.
Had more than two kinds of lessons before you turned 18
Nope. But it seems a lot of the kiddies I went to hs with had private violin/other musically thingie lessons. Didn't seem to set me back though.
The people in the media who dress and talk like me are portrayed positively
People who dress and talk like me are labelled "NERDS," and sometimes we're portrayed quite negatively actually, yeah.
Had a credit card with your name on it before you turned 18
No way. And I feel kinda sorry for people who did, since they start out life owing their firstborn child to AmEx.
Your parents (or a trust) paid for the majority of your college costs
A trust????? *rotfl* Are you insane? Though to be completely honest, we have at least one high school classmate who's now living one her trust fund. Nice job if you can get it.
Your parents (or a trust) paid for all of your college costs
Nope. Loans and jobs and scholarships and thingies. AND I went to public college! Though my batshit mom still blames me for bankrupting the family with college & grad school (the latter of which they paid $0.00 for).
Went to a private high school
Heh. No. Actually, my hometown had a totally artsy-fartsy private hs. If I'd gone there, I'd probably be basket-weaving now.
Went to summer camp
Nope, though I'll bet my parents wished they had sent me.
Had a private tutor before you turned 18
No, and no private tutor after I turned 18.
Family vacations involved staying at hotels
Does Motel 6 count? We also camped once, and took a motor home once.
Your clothing was all bought new before you turned 18
Nope, though, being the oldest, I escaped a lot of hand me downs. The 'rents also had this psycho thing where they were always expecting me to lose weight before I got pretty clothes.
Your parents bought you a car that was not a hand-me-down from them
My 'rents didn't buy me a car period. Nor even let me near their car. They were flippin' weird.
There was original art in your house when you were a child
You mean like the stuff mom stuck up on the 'fridge with magnets? Yeah, plenty!
Had a phone in your room before you turned 18
Hey, I still don't have a phone in my room! I'm a Luddite, I am.
You and your family lived in a single family house
Yup.
Your parent(s) owned their own house or apartment before you left home
Yup. They actually did kinda well - SoCal real estate.
You had your own room as a child
Partly. I mostly shared a room with my bratty sister. She moved out at some point. Then at another point, she got a boyfriend, and they also started to take over my room.
Had your own TV in your room in High School
Nope. BUT, my little sister had a TV in her room when I was in high school. Isn't that like the most shocking story of parental neglect you've ever heard? I must go compose some emo poetry....
Flew anywhere on a commercial airline before you turned 16
Yup. I flew alone on a commercial airline when I wuz 12.
Went on a cruise with your family
God, no! Trapped on a fucking cruise ship with my family?
Went on more than one cruise with your family
Do you want to make me ill?
Your parents took you to museums and art galleries as you grew up
Yup.
You were unaware of how much heating bills were for your family
Er, I'm another SoCal person, so, not really, no. I know they kept the house really cold plus opened windows in the middle of winter.
OK, so what have we learned kiddies? Tiki didn't get private violin lessons and thus must continue to make sense of her shattered existence?
What's kind of interesting - we do know (as in, went to hs with) some types who'd probably qualify as over privileged according to this meme. But, they're mostly fucked up beyond belief nowadays. Seems like the best path is somewheres in the middle - by all means read to your kiddies, but make the little bastards work for a living.
EDIT:
fullcircleagain gots more infos here.

Date: 2008-01-02 10:21 pm (UTC)I am actually old enough to remember listening to vinyl regularly, but I'm totally in love with the ease and non-clutter of the digital era. I'm honestly curious who LISTENS to their vinyl records, not just collects the indie-tronic ones because it's like, so keweliez.
I think I would've probably ended up a professor if I had more energy/less sick/didn't get married and became happy. Academia was definitely one of my sole senses of self-worth. (I got over it!) However, the political aspects might have well scared me off, even then. Hell, I'm scared of the political aspects of teaching at freaking dorky local public schools. :P

SHOUJO MANGA
In which case, it's definitely a positive!
See, this mess is fun to deconstruct.

Date: 2008-01-02 10:56 pm (UTC)I guess the closest thing for me might be every Janeane Garofalo character she's played in a movie EVAR (over-intelligent "best friend" type). And it's not one I find positive, as she never gets the guy, other than Cats and Dogs, or the ending of Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion (which I loved). And there's the rub - it's by and large a portrayal that's seen in relation to men, ie, success with or lack thereof ("I am smart and quirky, and thus always lose to the blond"). Mr. Tiki finds me quite cute, so I haven't really given a shit what "boys" think of me for over a decade (not that I cared overly much before).
I think, to be quite honest, that Lilo is one of the best media avatars for me that I've come across in recent years. She's weird and smart and difficult, and because she's a child, she doesn't really deal with a lot of gender issues. So, yeah, I guess I'm best portrayed by cartoons as well. I wonder what that says about media?
Have you seen this yet?
