My friends who are not familiar with Japanese popular culture typically react with bafflement when I try to explain that there is an extremely popular genre of romantic stories, eagerly consumed by women and girls, whose plots revolve around the tribulations of cute gay men. But, I've noticed a lot of the news stories about Brokeback Mountain mention that some regard the movie as a type of "chick flick."
