Huh. Interestingly enough, the original Japanese bio specifies that the winged frog is his familiar (literally "servant demon") rather than a random thing that he created. I wonder if their translator couldn't figure out how to translate it, or figured that he'd play it safe and avoid mentioning demons to America.

Yeah, it's a transliteration of the Japanese phrase. A winged frog in Japanese is literally "a frog with wings growing [out of its back]". Likewise, a pegasus would be "a horse with wings growing".
